The Official Fashion Steps Out @ Orchard 2012 Casting Team has started its search for the Next Face of Asia 2012!
The NEXT FACE of ASIA 2012 is a contest in search for new-up-and-coming models in Asia held from now to 27 Apr 2012 (the “Contest Period”).
It is a modelling contest for aspiring models who wish to propel their modelling career to the next level.
It is organised and managed by Orchard Road Business Association and modernAge Design and Communications (the “Organisers”) in conjunction
with Fashion Steps Out @ Orchard 2012 (“FSO 2012”).

If you think your models have what it takes to become our Next Face of Asia, submit your applications to us with the following.

1. Completed Contestant Application (including a signed Release and Waiver)

2. Three-minute video clip labelled clearly with applicant's name. The videotape must meet the following requirements:

· Length: three (3) minutes maximum. Anything over three (3) minutes will not be considered.

· Format: DVD or mp4 only.

· Content: Tell us who you are and why you would make the ultimate Next Face of Asia 2012.

· Part of the video should include the applicant's best runway walk.

3. Three colour photographs of the applicant, each to be taken within the previous 30 days and clearly labelled with his/her name.

· one (1) full body (wearing swimsuit) colour photograph w/o D.I or Photoshop

· one (1) close up colour photograph of model face w/o D.I or Photoshop

· one (1) colour photograph of any test shoots/editorial spread

You've been in the modeling line for some time now. You did a few shoots, stand in some events but still it's hard to get bookings for yourself. Are you that ugly? No, you're even prettier than some full-booking-models. You don't reach requirements? No, you're tall, you can pose for pictures well, you can even catwalk. Why isn't anyone calling you?

One more small aspect you have to look at being a model, other than your looks and your skills to catwalk; it's your ATTITUDE. "Attitude? What do you mean?" you asked. Well, here are some reason a booker (like me) won't even bother calling you.

1) Being a pain-in-the-a$$ Diva

Bear in mind, you're a model who's working not a princess or prince or queen. So, being very very very demanding will not only annoy us but all kind of pissed us off. Yes, we are oblige to take care of ALL your needs during the shoot but, we will throw away your number and profile right after the shoot. There are many other models out there who are evenly skilled and easier to work with

2) Being irresponsible

Being VEEERY late for a shoot, or sometimes not appearing for a shoot, is ok BUT if we are informed earlier? If you can't go, or not sure if you can go, do not promise that you will. If you know you can't make it, INFORM, so you save everyone's time and energy plus give us some time to look for other replacements.

3) There's no discipline

It's almost the same as 2), and what I mean by this is the passion in you to be one. You don't open more doors to learn from mistakes. You take critics negatively and personally. Are you serious about being a supermodel or are you just wanting to be one for the sake of being one for the name?

Modeling is not just about looks. It's about the attitude of a person and the character you want people to feel together with the fashion you're selling. I hope I encounter lesser model wannabes with very very serious attitude problem.

PS: Ever wonder why some supermodels are just normal looking but they are way beyond your league? Even if you and everyone around you feels that you have better look?

The booker is on hand in the office to organise and deal with models. This includes informing them about casting (model job interview), jobs and shows. The booker must make sure the models have the right information and to attend on time. It also involves having a personal touch and excellent communication skills to deal with models.

On the other hand the candidate must be good with clients. This involves excellent communication skills, customer service and also sourcing new clients. Also invoicing clients and sorting out payments.

The role is full time and working hours are flexible but the opportunity is there for the correct individual to create a name for themselves within the industry. As the opportunity is office based you will be required to work from the office with regards planning etc.

A booker is basically a sales person ... who's got a "book" of models who are signed with the agency. They promote their models to prospective clients ... by knowing who is casting for ads and commercials, etc. and sending out the models' marketing materials ... comp cards, and if requested, their portfolios. A booker needs to have a huge "rollodex" with lots of contacts in the fashion and commercial industry. If one or more of that booker's models are hired for the gig, the agency gets paid a percentage, typically about 20% of the billed amount for the models' work, from both the client and the model.

In order to do this effecitvely, a booker has a variety of responsibilities.

First the booker must find and select models to represent ... models that meet the typical client requests. So they need to understand the market that they work in and be sensitive to clients' shifts in what they usually need. They must have strong models with the right looks for the market, but not too many of any "type" ... so they don't compete against each other.

Models are usually found by holding open calls, often held for a couple of hours every week at the booker's office. Very few of them are ever selected ... only ones that fill the booker's current needs and the rare model who is just so strong that the booker knows that her look would get her a lot of work. Some agencies have mail in submissions only, asking for a couple of photos and the model's stats and they call any one that they might be interested in. Very few agencies go out and scout ... no need to. Aspiring models come to them in groves. People who cll themselves model scouts, are usually working a scam.

Once a model is selected, the booker and the model often sign a contract, laying out what the terms of representation are ... what the commission to the agency is and whether or not the model may find work through other means or not. The model is more or less employing the agency to find her work ... and in return pays them a commission.

The booker works with the newly represented model and helps her to put together a strong portfolio ... making recommendations to good photographers that they know can produce the right kind of images for the booker's market. This is done at the model's expense ... she pays the photographer directly.

The booker also has accounting duties. Any expenses that the agency incurs on beholf of the model will be charged to the model such as shipping portfolios, copies, postage, etc.

And the booker is responsible to make sure the models show up, prepared and on time to castings and gigs. Most models are still teenagers, and not always responsible. If a model fails to show, the agency stands to not only loose money but credibility. So a good booker is always aware of what is going on with the models, and always has a back up plan. He/she's sort of a parent and a faux employer.

What I don't know is exactly how a booker is paid, but I suspect it's commision related ... the more business heshe creates, the more pay is earned.

So ... you can see that a good booker must have strong business skills, able to multitask, be skilled at networking, have a good eye for the right models, have the patience and skills to work with rookies and teenagers, and be able to sell the client on the fact that his/her models are the best for their needs.

Most bookers either started as interns/assistants working for an established booker for a few years before getting a booker job. Otherwise they sometimes come out of the fashion or PR industries or even advertising where they have previously worked with models and have a lot of contacts in the industry

Being a booker is a tough job – the base salary is very low and most of your income comes from your commission. If you can’t get a lot of high paying jobs for your models, you won’t eat. An editorial shoot for a new face might only pay $300-500 so your commission would be $30-50. But if you can book one of your models a $1 million Estee Lauder contract, you get $100K just for that one job.

You hear about models being discovered while they're walking down the street, and trust me, it happens. I know because I'm a guy whose job it is to pluck people from obscurity and turn them into stars. Everyone thinks modeling is a glamorous business...and it is. But things can get crazy. In the six years I've been a model agent, I've seen it all — backstabbing, diva demands, drug problems, and more. Since I can't damage my models' reps by talking publicly about them, I have to get it all off my chest by telling these anonymous tales.

Getting Started

When I was in my early 20s, I quit my job as a fashion illustrator in New York City, moved to Miami, and soon became a model agent. Basically, an agent's job is to discover and groom models. I guess I had a knack for it, because after two years, I was hired to work at one of the top agencies in town. We represent about 100 girls and 30 guys (stars and up-and-comers), and of the 200 or so pictures I receive each day from aspiring models around the world, I call about two a month. If I truly believe the guy or girl could be the next big thing, the agency will fly them in and arrange a professional photo shoot.

But I've discovered some of the best models when I wasn't even looking. Once I was eating at an outdoor restaurant and spotted this tall, beautiful 13-year-old girl walk by with her parents and some friends. I pulled the girl and her mom aside and explained that she had the potential to be a great model, and they could come in to the agency and talk to us (I say us so people don't think I'm some random creep) if they were interested. Another time, I was at the beach and noticed that a male lifeguard was gorgeous. Both of those finds are going to be successful — I just know it.

Being a model booker calls for tactfulness and an eye for talent.

Scoop Management assistant model booker Cara Le Provost was working as a hostess on a luxury boat in the US when a brush with designer Calvin Klein made her decide to get into the fashion industry. Less than 12 months after the encounter, Le Provost has returned to Sydney after five years travelling the world and has begun her new career.

In July last year, Le Provost was working on a boat moored next to Klein's luxury yacht. But it wasn't Klein's party that night that piqued her interest in fashion.

"In the morning, everybody was gone and it was him and, possibly, his wife, standing out on the jetty playing with yo-yos ... and they just looked like normal people," she says.

"It just made fashion tangible for me, it was something anyone could do and it wasn't all about celebrities and glamour."

As an assistant model booker Le Provost helps find and manage an array of talent.

"It starts by scouting the model," she says. "Then we bring them in and test shoot them and get them to meet some clients. From there on my role is to assist the senior bookers with managing their careers."

Scouting for potential models can happen anywhere, from Bondi Beach to suburban shopping malls. Le Provost says she is still training her eye to spot male models with that special something.

"You can see a 16-year-old surfie guy and know he is going to be perfect for a Dolly shoot and we can pick out certain people for magazines and clients."

Turning away people is heartbreaking, Le Provost says.

"It is painstaking to explain why they are not right, especially if it is something they have wanted to do for a long time," she says.

After returning to Australia, Le Provost enrolled at FBI Fashion College in a Certificate IV in Fashion Business. The college was important in helping her land the job at Scoop, despite only being a few months into her course.

"Because I was doing the Fashion Business course and because Scoop was looking for someone to get into their agency, I was recommended by FBI to go for the interview,'' she says. "Somehow within four months of coming back I had this full-time job, I was just blown away by how lucky I am."

Despite the industry's reputation for having its share of prima donnas, Le Provost says only models who get along with photographers and clients get booked.

"I do not want people to think the fashion industry is all fighting tooth and nail and being bitchy all the way to the top," she says.

She attributes part of her quick success to advice she received from her boss: try to be nice to people and efficient.

Male modeling covers a wide range of fashion and photographic styles and some of the most well-known male models have worn things they would not normally have worn out in public. But rather than get embarrassed and blow off the whole male modeling business, they stuck it out and completed their modeling jobs with a great attitude that made it all seem natural.

Next, you need to know what it takes to get noticed by a male modeling agency. There are thousands of good-looking guys with perfect bodies out there looking to get the right modeling agency’s attention, and you’ll just be another face in the crowd if you just walk in with a modeling portfolio and nothing else. Consider taking bit parts as a walk-on actor or in community theater to raise your visibility and add to your credit list. Male modeling jobs are not easy to come by and you need to have an edge when working in this industry; acting is just one way to do it.

Where Do i Start?

Of the 5 years that I have been a modeling agent I must say that the one question that is constant in my consciousness above all other questions is: “How do I become a model? Where do I start?” followed by “Can you meet my sister/nephew/son/daughter?” and “why do I you have to be so tall to model? As well as, “when I make it BIG you’ll be sorry!” wait…sorry, that’s a statement.

Here are a few tips to get you started:

1. Take a long, honest look in the mirror. Are your features symmetrical?

2. Buy a copy of Vogue and take a long look at the models.

3. Figure out whether you can see yourself in those pages.

4. Take pictures of yourself. Full frontal face, profile, full-length body, side profile of body, bathing suit full length and a smiling shot.

5. Send them to modeling agencies in your area. Include all of your contact information.

Keep in mind that if you live in Arizona you shouldn’t send pictures to FORD NEW YORK unless you have already made plans to move there. Will the agency relocate you? Not likely.

Professional Pictures are not necessary but can be a plus. Visit a nearby college and see if they have a photography department. Spend $200 to get a photography student to take pictures of you. Cut out pics from magazines. Raid your closet and put together 5 outfits the night before. Wear light makeup-we need to see your face and skin. Wear your hair natural and down (maybe try a ponytail or updo as well) Pick a great outdoor locations and have fun.

If you have the money to spend…hire a photographer, a stylist and hair and makeup artist. This can run you as much as $1000 or more. Be sure to look at their portfolios before you hire them. Make sure the kind of pictures they take reflect the kind of pictures you want. Photographers aren’t as versatile as they think they are; let their work speak for them.

There are many different types of modeling categories. Each modeling category has different requirements. The main modeling categories are:

* Editorial / Fashion
* Commercial / Print
* Fitness
* Plus Size
* Kids
* Real People

Modeling is open to both male and female models and people of any ethnics or national background. While some modeling categories can have very specific height or weight requirements others can be more accessible. There are models of all ages, up to 60+.The two main modeling categories are Editorial/Fashion (i.e. runway and fashion magazine models) and Commercial. Editorial/Fashion has very strict requirements for height and weight, Commercial is a very broad category with requirements that are not as strict, there are all sorts of commercial models. Basic height requirements for the two main modeling categories, Commercial and Editorial/Fashion modeling usually are in these ranges,

Commercial Modeling:
* female:5'6 to 5'11
* male: 5'9 to 6'2

Editorial / Fashion modeling:
* female:5'8 to 6'0
* 90lb- 120lb

* male:5'9 to 6'2
* 120lb- 170lb

Plus-Size modeling:
5'8 to 6'2
* size 10-18

Keep in mind these are just general guidelines and are not absolute.

While there are some exceptions, in most cases female commercial models have to be at least 5'6 or 5'7 and usually no more than 5'11 tall (for male models at least 5'9). If you are 5'5 or under your chances of success are very limited in comparison to taller models.

For fashion/editorial modeling, the requirements are even more stringent. There are very few fashion/editorial models under 5'8, most are 5'10 and taller. Male fashion/editorial models usually have to be at least 5'11. You can still try modeling if you are not within these requirements, but you will have far less chances of succeeding than if you fit within the requirements.

Keep in mind modeling is a very competitive business and it is not easy to break into. We cannot guarantee that you will get signed or get modeling work/job by clients or other booking agencies. Your success will depend a lot on your looks, stats (height, weight, etc..) and your personality.

Every Wednesday afternoon we have open calls. Hundreds of girls line up to be seen by agents in the hopes of starting a new or continuing a modeling career with Ford. What you wear says a lot about who you are and how you live. What you wear to a casting is the first and sometimes only impression another person will get of you. It is VERY important to "look the part." Ideally you should appear Model-esque i.e. relaxed, confident, hip and cool.

All of the girls who attend open calls are attractive girls. Not all of them however are models. Being a model isn't only about "look" it's about attitude and personality. One of the biggest mistakes girls make is showing up with loud, ultra-trendy outfits that make them appear insecure and look like they are trying too hard.

Here are a few examples of what NOT to wear:

You never want to hide behind too much makeup or accessories. You should be a "blank canvas" wearing Simple clothing that show off your body and clean, fresh makeup that show off your face and bone structure.

Basic Casting Rules
- If you are NOT 5'10" or taller, NEVER go to a casting without your heels.
- Never be too colorful or too trendy.
- Never leave your pictures at home.
- Always triple check hygiene.
- NEVER wear too much makeup

What to wear to Summer castings:
• Sun dresses are a must
• Short skirts are great for showing off legs.
• Tanks tops simplify your look

What to wear to Spring/Fall castings:
• Skinny jeans show off legs and keep them warm.
• T-Shirts instead of tanks. Baby Tees are best because they hug the body more.
• A scarf adds a little life to a plain outfit. It's trendy and sophisticated.
• A sweater is a must for unpredictable weather and is good for layering.
• Pumps add height and keep the toes warm.

What to wear to Winter Castings:
• Long-sleeved fitted knit tops and dresses
• Opaque tights show off legs and keep them warm
• Skinny jeans
• Flat or high heeled boots (depending on your height)
• Always layer over fitted baby-tees and tank tops peel off the layers before you see the agent/client (remember the idea is to see your body)

We will try the wire action to all birds.
It will be very hot wearing the bird suit so we need to get talents that are willing to corporate and consider the situation that they will be in.
We don’t want any trouble on the shoot day with the birds.
With the bird talents they need to be fit and healthy and also know how to act as well (the body movement is very important to the commercial).
